5 Staging Tips to Make Your Home Look Bigger

Although an empty home for sale always looks larger, it also feels abandoned. On the flip side, it’s important not to have too many items, as this will make it difficult for buyers to focus on the features of your home rather than your possessions. With the right staging tactics, you can highlight the top qualities of your home, hide any imperfections, and make rooms feel bigger.

1. Remove Unessential Items

Try to have a minimal number of items in your home. Start by removing small items that make rooms feel cluttered. Hide personal items away in the kitchen, living room, and bedrooms. You should also empty shelves, just leaving a few items on them to reduce distractions. Next, consider the furniture. For instance, in the living room, you should have little more than the couches and coffee table. Bedrooms should have beds that are small enough to leave ample room on either side.

It may be worth putting some belongings into storage if your new home is not ready while you’re staging your current home.

2. Put Furniture in the Right Places

In addition to removing some unnecessary pieces of furniture, change the layout. This will make it easier for buyers to walk around the house. Consider where the walkways are and move any furniture that’s in the way. In the living room, the placement of couches is extra important. Although you may typically have your couches pushed up against the walls, it’s better to move them into the middle of the room. This will stop buyers from focusing on where the room ends.

3. Repaint the Walls

You may feel like repainting is a waste of time because the new owners will be painting anyway to suit their own style. However, repainting is a great way to refresh a space. Plus, you can make your home more appealing by choosing the right colours. Avoid dark colours, as these absorb light and make a room less inviting. If you prefer something other than white, consider pale tones like rose or peach.

4. Increase the Light

Another way to brighten up the walls is to add mirrors. A large framed mirror is ideal as a neutral decoration that also makes the room feel more spacious.

In addition, you can add more light by reducing window treatments. If you don’t want to remove them entirely, at least switch from heavy drapes to simple shades.

5. Remove Small Rugs

You may be tempted to purchase additional rugs to cover more of the floor. However, this may make rooms feel smaller. If you have a hardwood floor, consider removing all the rugs and carpet. Alternatively, one area rug is better than several small rugs.
